Terrorism becoming more deadly

Acts of terrorism have been less frequent in recent years, but more deadly. According to the U.S. National Commission on Terrorism:

  • From 1980 to 1984, there were 5,300 injured or killed in terrorist attacks worldwide.

  • The number of victims increased to 5,800 in the 1985 to 1990 period.

  • It fell to 4,900 in the 1991 to 1994 period.

  • But casualties skyrocketed to 15,600 killed or injured worldwide in the 1994 to 1999 period.

The total casualties from last Tuesday's attack will not be known for some time, but certainly will exceed the death toll in the attack on Pearl Harbour.
