Prices set by state not a good idea

MEDICAL schemes are currently obliged to pay in full — regardless of how much healthcare providers charge — for the compulsory package of benefits known as prescribed minimum benefits. Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has proposed amendments to these regulations, which, if accepted, will limit medical schemes’ liabilities.

The proposed amendments say medical schemes are liable for payment for services in accordance with the billing rules and the tariff codes of the national health reference price list, published by the Council for Medical Schemes in conjunction with the Department of Health in 2006.
