Conceptions of Freedom: Individualist and
Communitarian Perspectives

Freedom means different things to different people. We are excited to host a thoughtful discussion on the different conceptions of liberty in the South African context featuring Ernst Roets, Martin van Staden, and Mark Oppenheimer.

Our panellists will explore points of agreement and disagreement on the following topics:

  • The Individualist and Communitarian approaches to freedom
  • The relationship between the individual and their community
  • The appropriate role of the state
  • How to resist socialist policies and build prosperity in South Africa
