The Free Market Foundation (FMF) is delighted to announce that economist Loane Sharp has joined the FMF.
Previously, Loane was a prominent and outspoken labour economist at Adcorp, South Africa’s eminent employment services company. Prior to Adcorp, he was an award-winning investment strategist at Investec, one of South Africa’s foremost investment banks. A member of the Economics Society of South Africa, Loane’s academic career includes an M.Com in economics from the University of Cape Town and scholarships from the National Research Foundation. He has also received prizes by the Natale Labia Society.
FMF executive director, Leon Louw ,said, “Loane’s expertise in the South African labour market is especially welcome while we proceed with the FMF’s high court challenge to S 32 of the Labour Relation Act”. This clause allows for the automatic extension of bargaining council agreements to non-parties and is directly responsible for keeping millions of would be workers out of a job and their dependents in abject poverty.
“Loane’s experience and ability will be a significant enhancement to our existing skills across a variety of policy areas and we are delighted to welcome him to the FMF family,” said Louw.

Note to the editor
The FMF is an independent, non-profit, public benefit organisation, created in 1975 by pro-free market business and civil society national bodies to work for a non-racial, free and prosperous South Africa. As a policy organisation it promotes sound economic policies and the principles of good law. As a think tank it seeks and puts forward solutions to some of the country’s most pressing problems: unemployment, poverty, growth, education, health care, electricity supply, and more. The FMF was instrumental in the post apartheid negotiations and directly influenced the Constitutional Commission to include the property rights clause: a critical cornerstone of economic freedom.
The FMF has a wealth of information in papers, articles and opinion pieces available on the website which can influence the public debate and present alternative policies to the people of South Africa. Please look at www.freemarketfoundation.com.
