SEX, sleaze, prostitutes, strippers, gambling, drugs, celebrities, opulence, billionaires, fast cars, beautiful people, designer jewellery, the greatest shows on earth, scholarly conferences, and millions of hedonistic plebs. All in the middle of an inhospitable desert. Las Vegas — and nothing that clearly explains why it is one of the world’s most dazzling phenomena.
Sun City can also be considered remote and popular so what does it have in common with Vegas? Gambling? But ostentatious casinos exist everywhere. Sex and drugs, maybe? But both are banned in both places and are increasingly, often legally, available elsewhere. Perhaps it is top entertainers and championship golf courses? Likewise, they are available in countless other, more likely places. "So why here?" I pondered as I explored the spectacle that is uniquely Vegas.
