‘He did not let politics silence him’ – FMF remembers luminary Raymond Ackerman

The Free Market Foundation (FMF) is saddened by news of the passing of Pick n Pay founder Raymond Ackerman, and expresses its condolences to his family and colleagues.

‘Ackerman was one of the few in business to stand up to the state during the apartheid era. He did not let politics silence him. The FMF today calls for business leaders to follow Ackerman’s good example,’ said FMF CEO David Ansara.

Ackerman received the 7th FMF Luminary Award in 2014, for ‘his role as a great entrepreneur who followed his dream and changed retailing in South Africa for the lasting benefit of all consumers.’

In 2014, Ackerman received the Order of the Baobab in Silver. The Presidency wrote at the time that Ackerman ‘was one of the first retailers to fight on behalf of the South African consumers against the apartheid state’s monopoly on basic goods’. The Presidency continued:

 

‘Ackerman was one of the first executives to promote black South Africans to senior positions and to acknowledge black trade unions. This was at the period when such unions were banned from operating in this country. He also abolished race classification on the company’s human resources payroll. He always appointed the right person to the position regardless of skin colour.

Ackerman fought constantly against the Group Areas Act, stating that it was unjust, unfair and inhumane. He issued housing loans to staff as government refused to grant housing loans to black South Africans during apartheid. He implemented educational grants to staff and their children to encourage tertiary education at major universities, at a time when equal education for all did not exist.’


Today’s government praised and acknowledged Ackerman for his refusal to toe the ideological line set by their predecessors. It is this example that corporate South Africa must follow today, rejecting the ideological premises laid out for them that have proven destructive to our society and economy.

Die Vryemarkstigting (FMF) is bedroef oor die nuus van die heengaan van Pick n Pay-stigter Raymond Ackerman en betuig sy innige simpatie aan Ackerman se familie en kollegas.

Ackerman het voortdurend teen die Groepsgebiedewet geveg, en het verklaar dat dit onregverdig, onbillik, en onmenslik was. Hy het huislenings aan staf uitgereik omdat die regering geweier het om tydens die apartheidsjare huislenings aan swart Suid-Afrikaners toe te staan. Hy het onderwysbeurse aan staf en hul kinders verleen om tersiêre onderrig by groot universiteite aan te moedig, gedurende ‘n tydperk toe gelyke onderwys nie vir almal bestaan ​​het nie.’


Die huidige regering het Ackerman geprys en erken vir sy weiering om die ideologiese lyn te volg wat deur hul voorgangers uitgestippel is.
