FMF NEWSLETTER 7 March 2018

FMF NEWSLETTER 7 March 2018
EDITORIAL

Dear friend of the FMF

In this week’s feature article, Martin van Staden exposes both the impracticality of enforcing a higher drinking age, as well as the fact that this move by the government has no moral basis. The government views 18 year old’s as mature enough to vote and drive cars, but not to drink responsibly. Raising the drinking age to 21 will mean that there are more people drinking ‘illegally’. If the government truly wants to prevent deaths and accidents from the effects of drinking, such as drunk driving, they would use their resources much better by ensuring that the current laws are enforced effectively.

FEATURE article

Raising the drinking age is condescending and tyrannical; doesn’t work either – MARTIN VAN STADEN

Government appears intent on steaming ahead with the Liquor Amendment Bill, which will, among other things, raise the legal drinking age from 18 to 21. This is as condescending as it is tyrannical, and South Africans should resist this and other programmes by government to take freedom away from the people and vest itself with paternalistic powers.
