FUNDING PROPOSAL

FMF Alternatives to ANC Policy Proposals at ANC National Policy Conference
FMF would appreciate it if you would consider an ad hoc donation to this important opportunity to revisit our solutions to South Africa’s many challenges. If you would like to make a donation, please complete the form here.

The ANC is holding its fifth National Policy Conference from 31 June to 5 July 2017. Delegates will discuss and decide upon ANC policy for the next five years. President Jacob Zuma has set the tone by calling for “radical economic transformation”, which is the underlying theme across all policy discussion documents.

FMF has come out in support of radical economic transformation. However, unlike government and the ANC, the FMF can define what radical transformation would look like: A substantive change from past and current economic policies, to “radical” free markets, that is, less of the same and more of something new.

FMF plans to release 10 media releases before end-June outlining the FMF’s vision for radical economic transformation. Each will include links to submissions and proposals to show South Africa that real economic transformation is not only possible and viable, but desirable for all.

EDITORIAL

Dear friend of the FMF

This week’s feature article explores the history of the concept, and implementation, of the rule of law. Rex van Schalkwyk applies the rule of law as it ought to be; it is meant to curtail the working of the state and is not applied at the state’s whims and wishes. Rex explains three misconceptions regarding the rule of law which currently pervade our society, and why we need to assess and fix these. Using both history and current examples, we are given a rounded, deeper understanding of the rule of law.

FEATURE article

The rule of Anu and Bel – REX VAN SCHALKWYK

“(And) then Anu and Bel (both gods) called by name me, Hammurabi, The Exalted Prince, who feared God, to bring about the rule of righteousness in the land. To destroy the wicked and the evil doers; so that the strong should not harm the weak”.

This injunction is inscribed as the preface to Hammurabi’s famous Law Code of 1750 BC. The Law Code, proclaimed in obedience to the command, was recorded on a series of tablets, a remnant of which is on display at the Louvre in Paris. To ensure that all citizens were familiar with the law, the Code was publicly displayed in the city state of Babylon.
