In this week’s feature article, James Peron assesses whether the claim that South African Airways encourages tourism has any merit. Examining a wide range of prices and options, Peron shows that SAA does not encourage tourism to the country – rather it discourages tourism because it is more expensive and less efficient than other airlines. Peron points out that while SAA is not the main cause of lower numbers of tourists visiting the country, the millions of Rands spent on the failing SOE could be better used in fighting that main cause: crime.

The other day I saw a promotion for flights to South Africa and curiosity got the better of me. While looking at the various options I remembered the hype made by the government to support propping up the failing SAA. They said SAA was important for tourism. So I investigated the flights available with the tourism argument in mind.
