FMF NEWSLETTER 3 AUGUST 2017

EDITORIAL

Dear friend of the FMF

This week’s feature article, written by Martin van Staden, answers recent suggestions that South Africa’s provinces be reduced from nine to six. Such a move violates the Constitution and the Rule of Law. The uncertainty and instability caused by such a move would add to the difficult political and social climate currently dominating the country. For our democracy to mean anything tangible to the people it needs to be closer to them – centralisation in the form of fewer provinces will mean government moves away from the people, and it will be even more difficult to hold them accountable.

WORTH READING: Get South Africa Growing by Brian Kantor
"
In my book Get SA Growing, I try to build trust in, and respect for, market forces by examining and explaining what goes on in our economy and how and why it could be better organised for the benefit of nearly all of us – especially for the many desperate poor. We should have more respect for the rights of individuals to make their own decisions and bear the consequences of them." Radical Economic Transformation (RET)
RET can only be achieved if we break from the economic mentality which has governed this country since colonial times – paternal statism – and adopt the only alternative which has been shown to deliver a better standard of living for all anywhere in the world – the free market system. Ahead of the ANC’s national policy conference earlier this month, FMF proposed the policy alternatives detailed in this media release.

FEATURE article

Reducing the number of provinces is an affront to the Rule of Law and democracy – MARTIN VAN STADEN

The African National Congress’ suggestion that the number of provinces be reduced from nine to six comes as a shock. Fortunately, our Constitution and the Rule of Law do not make abusing the levers of power that easy.
