FMF NEWSLETTER 28 March 2018

FMF NEWSLETTER 28 March 2018
EDITORIAL

Dear friend of the FMF

In this week’s feature article, Martin van Staden questions the reason for the unreasonably short period of one month for commenting on the controversial proposed amendment to section 25 of the Constitution. Such a substantive change to our Bill of Rights requires serious deliberation and public consultation. If the one-month commentary period is not changed to at least three months, the entire process will be flawed.

FEATURE article

More time required to comment on expropriation without compensation amendment – MARTIN VAN STADEN

South Africans will only have one month to submit comments on government’s plan to amend the Constitution to provide for expropriation without compensation before the Constitutional Review Committee will begin public hearings. Regardless of the arbitrary deadlines set by the National Assembly for the committee, this allotted time is inadequate and constitutionally suspect.
