FMF NEWSLETTER 21 DECEMBER 2016

EDITORIAL

Dear friend of the FMF

This week’s Feature Article deals with the role of imposed curricula in limiting the development of the knowledge and skills of young people. Such curricula were introduced in Britain in the latter part of the 19th Century as a result of a mistaken view that parents were not educating their children. This error was confirmed by the findings of Canadian economist, Edwin West, who carried out meticulous research on the issue. What is startling is that a government policy based on false information spread to the rest of the world and is still with us more than a century later. Not only is it still with us but it continues to wreak havoc in the lives of young people. It also plays a role in the mass unemployment we currently have in South Africa.

FESTIVE SEASON MESSAGE
The FMF Board, Executive Committee, Directors, consultants and staff wish our members, friends and fans a rejuvenating Festive Season. We look forward in 2017 to working toward a future filled with growth, employment and hope.

FEATURE article

South Africa’s schooling crisis EUSTACE DAVIE

Nine million people are unemployed in South Africa. There are many causes for this but a most important one is the devastating consequences of a poorly structured and executed schooling system. Learning environments constructed subject to the demands of government-mandated curricula cannot avoid failing many young people. Instead of beneficiaries, they become “victims”.
