FMF NEWSLETTER 16 AUGUST 2017

EDITORIAL

Dear friend of the FMF

This week’s feature article, written by Terry Markman, examines the decrepit state of South African Airways. Yet another bailout for the failing state-owned-enterprise means that South African taxpayers have to foot the bill. The SOE can replace CEOs and try different plans but because of its very nature and geographic location it will never be profitable. South African customers would be better served by a private market in air-travel competition; the state-owned monopoly of SAA is bound to experience failure after failure.

FEATURE article

SAA has no place in South Africa – TERRY MARKMAN

Good Luck to Vuyani Jarana, new CEO of SAA. Unfortunately, he will need much more than that. Why, oh why, did he accept to take over SAA? None of his Vodacom experience, where the main objective is to make a profit, will be of much use.

He will fail, of that there can be little doubt. Let me explain, as I doubt if anyone at SAA knows why.
