On 4 November 2017, in the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town, the Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre, in partnership with the Distell Development Trust, announced that a Panel of Judges had selected the FMF’s Khaya Lam (My Home) Land Reform Project as a PLATINUM Award Winner 2017! The Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre, for 17 years, has promoted initiatives in civil society that improve the quality of life of the poor in exceptional ways. Awards are made on rigorous evaluations, uncovering what is good and what works in South Africa. More than 500 people attended the event including FMF representatives Temba A Nolutshungu, and Perry and Veronica Feldman.

In this week’s feature article, Eustace Davie uses evidence from the UK to explain why governments should not attempt to run businesses. From costly nuclear power stations that had to be abandoned, an airship that crashed and killed 54 people, planting peanuts in huge areas of Tanzania that delivered poor crops, the uneconomical Concorde airliner, to London’s Millennium Dome that did not attract the expected numbers, these grandiose government projects ended up costing the UK taxpayers exorbitant sums of money. Instead of raising national prestige they dented it, just as Eskom, SAA and other SOEs are denting SA’s prestige and plunging the country into a debt crisis...

South Africa Can Work
An insightful and provocative book, written by Frans Rautenbach, a labour lawyer with a proven track record in a range of policy issues, in which he proposes a complete overhaul of policy thinking, and provides fresh arguments that effectively address South Africa’s high unemployment, race problems and lack of education. Rautenbach examines the fundamental problem of rent-seeking, to which he proposes two antidotes: the free market and decentralisation of government. Along the way he tackles holy cows such as affirmative action, trade unions, labour law and welfare payments. He also addresses contentious topics such as racism, white privilege, political correctness, state funding of higher education and mounting evidence that trade unions substantially suppress employment growth.

Given the interminable bad news South Africans are receiving about their state-owned enterprises (SOEs), such as the huge SAA losses, frequent cost increases at ESKOM, and poor management and losses experienced by a long list of SOEs, it might be useful to look at the disastrous experience of the UK government when it misguidedly entered into the field of enterprise.
